Let’s be real, relationships are hard work! It takes a lot of commitment, love, and above all communication. Then distance being thrown in the mix, things can get even more challenging! Whether you’re living across country or living apart due to the ongoing pandemic, hopefully these ideas can help keep the flame of love brightly burning.

“Love is not finding someone to live with. It’s finding someone you can’t live without.”

(Rafael Ortiz)

1. Send a LOVE notebook

This is a fun, old school way to keep the spark alive! Buy a notebook, write a love letter, draw something cute, and mail it off! I express my feelings more clearly through writing, rather than speaking on them. Definitely a fun, cute way to keep the communication going.

2. Felt cards

I love sending Felt notes! You can customize them with a cute picture, border design, and love message on the back! When we were living apart, my love adored receiving these in the mail. We live together now, but I still send them from time to time to see his smile when he receives a letter.

3. Watch a movie together

My hubby and I would do this a lot while dating! We would FaceTime on Friday nights cozying up on our own couches with snacks & wine, while watching a movie on Hulu or Netflix. It really felt like we were together on the same couch. Hulu has an awesome watch party option, click here for directions.

4. Bubble it up: Bath time!

Trying to add a little spice to your relationship? Then bubble it up! Fill up the bathtub with steaming water, sudsy soaps, Epsom salt, and oils! Try adding a few slices of fresh lemon for extra aromatics. Make a video call and let the steamy conversation begin! I love to use products from 1924 Custom Soapery. All their lovely creations are all natural, aromatic, and above all eco-friendly.

5. Road trip: Create a playlist

Create a playlist for the one traveling of songs you handpicked. What a great way for your love to start their journey! It will make the trip more entertaining and give them something to sing along to.

6. Help them out: Send groceries

Wake up, take the kids to school, go to work, school pickup, activities, work out, then head home to make dinner just to realize all you have is week old leftovers. Yikes! Sound familiar? My love would help ease the burden by making a grocery order and having it delivered in time for dinner. It was such a nice surprise and helped me cross one thing off my to do list.

7. Cook dinner together

See a recipe you’re wanting to try? Try it out together, but far apart! Maybe you’ll discover who the chef in the relationship is. Fun, easy, and above all you’re spending time together.

8. Good morning text with a love quote.

Send a cute love text every morning letting the other one know you are thinking of them. My love and I still do this. It makes my heart happy when reading his morning texts. If you can’t find the right words to say, send a cute love quote, meme, or picture to remind them of where your heart is. It’s the thought & effort that makes it count.

9. Send flower bulbs to plant.

I love fresh, cut flowers, but they never seem to last as long I would like. I was gifted flower bulbs to grow for Valentine’s day a few years ago and the plant is still growing strong! It blooms once a year and has come back twice already. I don’t have a green thumb either, so if I can keep them alive, so can you!

Long distance is only a struggle if you allow it to factor in on your love. What spontaneous things have you tried in a long distance relationship? What was your partners reaction? What advice would you give to other couples doing long distance? If you try out any of these tips, let me know how it turned out! I would love to hear all about it.
